Quad Cities’ House on the Rock
Wisconsin’s House on the Rock is a curious and regionally well-known tourist attraction located between Dodgeville and Spring Green, not too many miles from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin, although light years distant in critical acclaim. The Quad Cities area has its own house on the rock, located about a mile north of LeClaire, Iowa, The house sits a hundered or so yards from the Mississipi River, atop a rock cliff that appears to be part of a long-closed quarry.
In our travels north to Clinton, Iowa, this summer to see performances at the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre, we passed the house several times. On a warm June morning, when the sun illuminated the house, I took several photos, some from a driveway that took us close to the house.
I have found no information about the architect or owner, other than a story that a member of the Palmer family, of Davenport’s chiropractic college, had the house built.
