Photography, September 15, Centennial Bridge, Mississippi River

The Centennial Bridge, which opened in 1940, connects the downtowns of Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa. Currently undergoing maintenance work, it is closed to traffic until next month, leaving only two bridges open in the center of the Quad Cities. Our cross-river trips during busy late afternoons can now take as long as 45 minutes rather than the normal 20.

I’ve photographed this bridge many times but never in an impressionistic style. For these photos I used a long exposure, 1/5  to 1/20 of a second, and moved the camera in various ways to capture a sense of movement in the bridge.
