Zoe on Flugelhorn

The jazz band at Washington Junior High School works hard toward its big events in April and May. The first was the annual jazz night at Rock Island High School earlier this week. Each of the junior high school jazz bands and the high school jazz band performed four or five selections. Zoe had the opportunity to try the flugelhorn on a piece called “Ballad for Zoe.” The flugelhorn produces a sound that is darker and more mellow than that of the trumpet, a sound perhaps halfway between the trumpet and the french horn.

Here’s Zoe’s performance the other night. She shares the solo with her friend the saxophonist Jake Maranda. The start is a little rough, but her tone and phrasing improve later on.
