Pelicans on the Ice-Covered Mississippi
I took these photos two weeks ago, finding them with our dog, again on the far end of Credit Island. Four pelicans were lounging beside a pool of open water. Pearl watched for a while before she charged the birds. Fortunately, she returned in response to my loud call of her name, but I surely needed her assistance to get at least that one airborne. Its three fellows were happy enough to stay in water. The river was almost frozen over, and Pearl and I walked to an island that sits about 50 yards out into the main channel. But I wasn’t all that brave. A skier had left tracks across the ice, and Pearl, of course, went first.
